First I'd like to say how in love with this powerful piece of technology I am and have been dying for something like this to come out since I began my digital audio journey 20 years ago, when I tried out the demo earlier this year, buying the software with all the modules included was a no brainer; I don't need to tell you guys that you made something special here with RipX here and it'll be interesting to see how this software will impact the culture once everyone else catches up because as it stands it feels like you guys are criminally under the radar, or maybe I don't talk to enough people.
Now that praises have been given, I do have one major suggestion that I'm positive you guys have heard before and forgive me if this has already been addressed because I wasn't able to find a topic regarding this after doing some (admittedly brief) searching.
Two things mainly:
1. The ability to have the workspace stay in place even when the playhead goes offscreen. I can not stress enough how detrimental this functionality is, I don't know a single DAW or video editing software that doesn't have this functionality somewhere obvious and it is absolutely brutalizing my workflow, things that should have taken me minutes literally took hours because right when I have the window in a perfect spot to fix some audio and right when I locate the problem the screen goes away because it catches the playhead, and I'm well aware that there is an option for like COMMAND + SPACEBAR to keep the playhead in the same spot which kind of helps but not really if the playhead is offscreen a little bit before the part of the audio that you need to focus on. This software is so brilliant and sophisticated in its capabilities, it's hard to believe that the very demographic this program caters to hasn't been more vocal about the necessity of this feature, which seems like such a no-brainer to me that I hesitated calling it a "feature" because it's standard this many decades into computer-based creation/editing. I hope my tone isn't coming across as condescending or rude, there's is nothing but love behind these words and I only want to see your company and this program get better and prosper. I have one more suggestion that seems like it'd be a (relatively) manageable fix.
2. The ability to switch the keys or buttons for navigation. The other thing that I struggle with while using this program is scrolling and zooming, the shortcuts are literally the polar opposite of every other program I've used since I learned how to copy and paste (including programs outside of music and video creation/editing), and that being said my muscle memory refuses to acclimate to the controls that it seems like I'm stuck with. In literally every program I can think of I'm used to holding SHIFT + mouses scroll to move horizontally and to move vertically I just scroll naturally and then zooming in is something else opposite of what I'm used to which to be fair zooming in and out changes from from the program to program BUT because it's such a common occurrence there's usually an option to change it to whatever is more comfortable to the user whether it's scrolling naturally or reverse and/or choosing which modifier key COMAND/CTRL/SHIFT allows you to zoom or navigate other shortcuts. It might not seem like much but it has drastically impeded my workflow that's even more frustrating when I consider how everything else in this software is so game-changing.
In a nutshell, I just want to screen to stay put when the playhead goes offscreen and options to catch it whether it's manual or you know, just they way it's done in every single other program in this field. And the ability to change some keybindings especially when it comes to scrolling. because these two things actually enhance how frustrating the lack of the other thing is. After I fumble around and move literally the exact opposite of where I want to go in my workspace I finally get the screen where I want it to start editing, and as soon as I'm about to make a change or get comfortable, the screen jumps to the next part of the song because it's following the playhead (20 years of doing it a certain way based on DEFAULT settings mind you from several different programs and my brain is just not having it especially when I'd only be adjusting for the moments I'm using RipX.) I apologize if there is some type of setting or workaround that I've looked over but if not then can this PLEASE be addressed and then this will be my favorite program ever (in the audio space) next to Logic Pro. Thank you for creating such an invaluable tool and thank you for your time.
Many thanks for your feedback and suggestions. These have been passed on to our development team.
+1
My experience is much the same. I think it's momentous, groundbreaking software, but I hit solid brick walls sometimes, which really hamper me from becoming truly proficient in using the software.
I bought all the upgrades, but the UI isn't intuitive, as @jimmybean mentions. On top of that, it's hard to figure out what the app does and doesn't do. And when it fails me, why it does so.
Attention to interactions is deeply needed, especially given how much potential the software has, beyond it's immediate, easily accessible features.
Hopefully you can help. Music is my hobby. I play the 5-string banjo, but I don't play bluegrass. I play pop songs that I have liked throughout my life. Problem is -- no one to pick with. But here’s what I’d like to do:
- Load mp3 files some of which are symphonic and some acoustic small groups.
- Break out instruments to accompany me, mute others, and save as an mp3 which I will load into Audacity to play along with
- I might like to create a file of my singing and playing along with other instruments in the stems and save as an mp3.
I’ve used some pretty complex computer animation software, so I might be able to handle an app as sophisticated as this. I’d appreciate your or anyone else’s help, suggestions or advice on whether or not RipX is what I'm looking for.
Thanks

@baldeagle It's possible to create backing tracks to play along to with RipX and, with the DeepCreate module, you can also record into RipX. I recommend giving this a try with the free 21-day trial available from https://hitnmix.com/download-ripx/
For instruments other than voice, bass, piano and drums, it may sometimes be necessary to correct the assignment of notes within RipX. This can be done by listening to them, selecting them and then assigning them to another layer by clicking on the appropriate arrow button in the Layers Panel. A new layer can be added to the Layers Panel by clicking 'Add' beneath the list of layers.
There's also the possibility of using the Stereo Pass filter effect (from the Level Panel) to separate them if they have different stereo positions.
Just downloaded the RipX trial version. The first tune ripped was “Pie in the Face Polka” from the movie, “The Great Race”. It ripped the base out really well but everything else was in the Strings layer. It had the strings, woodwinds, and brass all in that layer. The woodwind (clarinet) and brass (trombone, trumpet) are clearly demarcated by their different waveforms. Is there some way to put these into separate layers? I tried making a new layer but wasn't succesfful. your help is appreciated.
Thanks
@baldeagle Did you follow my instructions in my post above? A new layer can also be added by hovering the mouse pointer over the title bar of the Layers Panel and clicking on the + button that appears.
@dave "This can be done by listening to them, selecting them".
I made a new layer but couldn't select a range of notes (C4 to C7). How are the notes selected? Is there a way to select a single wave form such as brass without having to select the range of notes?
Thanks
@baldeagle You can select the notes by clicking & dragging a selection rectangle over them or by clicking & Ctrl/Cmd-clicking on them. For more information on selections, including other ways to make them, please see pages 12-13 of the manual which can be opened from RipX's Help menu.
@dave I finally used the selection tool to add a layer. What would be nice is to have a free-form selection tool to make a new layer by selecting a single instrument's waveform. Anyway, thanks again.
